B. C. CLARE

The life and opinions of...

I Am

The poems in this collection stoke the dumpster fire of identity for a woman turning thirty. They delicately sift through the ashes of charred dolls and shaved hair, corpses and lovers, bears and kimonos.

This is B. C. Clare’s most vulnerable work.

Compassion Fables:
The Stag

‘The Stag’ follows the life of a young deer who goes through seasons of shedding and regrowing his antlers; each time the antlers become bigger and stronger, their repetitive loss becomes harder to bear. Deer encounters tall cliffs and fierce lions, harsh winters and soft songs. The story shares subtle insight into the sociology of forest animals, the biology of antlers, and the psychology of seasonal affective disorder, while taking the reader on an emotional journey of hope and compassion.

Through story & art, our aim is to inspire compassion towards ourselves and others who live with mental illness.

“Simple (so that kids will understand), beautiful in word and image, and surprisingly deep, these fables may go a long way toward reducing mental illness stigma in future generations.” Stephen P. Hinshaw
Author, ‘Another Kind of Madness: A Journey through the Stigma and Hope of Mental Illness’
